The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is mainly found in Central Asia, North Africa, East Africa, Middle East, and the Indian Subcontinent. It is the smallest of the hyenas.

The total population of striped hyena is 10,000 in the wild. Hyena’s population is Near-Threatened.
Adult hyenas weigh 22 to 55 kg (49 to 121 lb) and their tail is about 25 to 40 cm (9.8 to 15.7 in), and they stand up to 60–80 cm (24–31 in) at their shoulder.
There are five subspecies of striped hyenas. These are; Indian striped hyena, Barbary striped hyena, Sudanese striped hyena, Arabian striped hyena, Syrian striped hyena.

Striped hyenas are nocturnal animals. They can hunt in absolute darkness. Hyenas are scavengers. They eat when other predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, or caracals kill animals. Striped hyenas rarely hunt live animals.
They will eat tortoises, wild boar, porcupines, and kulan.
Unlike other hyenas, striped hyenas form small groups. Each group or clan consist of 2 – 7 members.
Hyena cubs are born blind. They will open their eyes 7 – 8 days after birth.
In Middle East, striped hyenas compete with other land predators such as a gray wolf and red fox.
They can live up to 12 years in the wild but the captive hyena has a maximum lifespan of 23 years.
