Crocodiles are one of the largest and the most dangerous marine reptiles living today. They are found in Australia, America, Asia, and Africa. Crocodiles are at the top of their food chains in their habitat. They will eat just about any animal no matter how big it is.
Crocodiles are carnivores. They will eat herbivorous mammals, fish, birds, crustaceans, insects, reptiles, and invertebrates. Crocodiles can also kill big animals such as wild boar and buffalo.
There are 14 subspecies of a crocodile. Crocodiles spend most of their time in water but they are equally good on land.
They can reach the size of 1.5 to 1.9 m (4.9 to 6.2 ft). Crocodile weigh as much as 1,000 kg (2,200 lb).
Saltwater
crocodile is the largest living crocodile. It can have a bite force of about 5,000 lbf (22,000 N) which is probably greater than most living mammals’ bite.
They can run at a speed of 17 km/h (11 mph) on land.
Smaller crocodiles have a lifespan of 30 – 40 years whereas larger species live as long as 60 – 70 years in the wild. One of the longest lived crocodile died in an Australian Zoo. She lived 120 – 140 years in captivity.
They can also see at night. Crocodiles use their sharp sense of smell while hunting animals at night.
